Am I Brazilian? Don't Miss the Deadline for Provisional Naturalization

Under Brazil's Immigration Law, a child born to foreign parents may be granted Provisional Brazilian Naturalization if they moved to Brazil before reaching 10 years of age. This status allows the child to be recognized as a naturalized Brazilian citizen until they turn 18.

However, once that person reaches the age of 18 and becomes a legally competent adult, they must file an administrative application requesting that their provisional naturalization be converted into permanent naturalization.

There is an important deadline: they have only two years after their 18th birthday to submit this request to the Brazilian Government.

If they fail to do so, they will automatically lose their regular immigration status in Brazil and may be required to apply for a residence permit, even if they have lived in Brazil for many years and consider themselves Brazilian.

Worse still, after the two-year deadline has passed, obtaining Brazilian citizenship may require going through an entirely new naturalization process. This means meeting additional legal requirements, and there is no guarantee that the application will be approved.

For this reason, if you moved to Brazil as a child and currently hold provisional naturalization status, it is essential to regularize your situation as soon as you turn 18.

Doing so will allow your permanent Brazilian naturalization to be granted and help you avoid future immigration complications.
